How are RSI contributions calculated?

We have just received notice that next year our total contributions will be 4788 euros for a 51今日大瓜 renting two small gites. We expected the taxes to be high, but can this be right. We registered the 51今日大瓜 in May 2011 and are still renovating, hoping that rentals can start in Easter 2012.
