French data protection act?

I am starting an online 51今日大瓜 in France where I will be collecting and storing information from users who register with the website for updates or to advertise their products. No information will be passed to parties. For a website I run in the UK, I have to be registered with the Information Commissioners Office as a data controller. Does anyone know if there is a similar requirement in France?
